55% of Visitors Read Your Articles For 15 Seconds or Less: Why We Should Focus on Attention Not Clicks

Millions of blog posts are published every day.

A small percentage gain traction and attract readers.

And among those readers, 55% will read the blog post for 15 seconds or less.

(If you're still reading, thanks for sticking with this one!)

The internet is a daily battle for attention. Everywhere you turn, people are trying to share the latest marketing hacks with many of the same points echoed repeatedly.

I'm guilty of it myself, and I completely understand why many of us write articles that are a little similar and repetitive. It's because they work. You could argue that content is becoming less art and more science. There are formulas to it - if you find the best keywords and write the correct content, you can build a high-traffic blog (that's almost a guarantee).

But is traffic the goal of content? Or can there be some new and unusual ways of measuring content success? I have some ideas I'd love to share.

line-section

Do the surface metrics really matter?

Why pageviews and sessions might be the wrong numbers to chase

Often (and, I'm guilty of this too) you'll hear someone talk about the success of their content by saying something like: “10,000 people read my post” or “60,000 people saw my video on Facebook.”

But I've started to wonder if this is really an accurate measure of successful content?

Even if someone clicks on your article, the likelihood of them taking it all in is very slim. The internet has changed many of our habits. But one thing that hasn't changed in nearly 20 years is the way we consume content online. Most of us still skim and rarely read a full post.

Many publishers have now started to focus on “attention metrics” alongside more traditional measurements like pageviews. Medium's Ev Williams explains their stance on which numbers are meaningful:

We pay more attention to time spent reading than number of visitors at Medium because, in a world of infinite content - where there are a million shiny attention-grabbing objects a touch away and notifications coming in constantly - it's meaningful when someone is actually spending time.

Maybe we need to stop focusing on how we can hack and grow the number of views our content gets. And instead, focus on how we can make each reader care about what we're saying.

I'd argue that you don't build a successful blog by accumulating a huge number of page views. Rather, you build a successful blog by creating something of value.

The only way content will drive results for any business is if it provides value to someone else. It's not necessarily about how many people you reach; it's how many you connect with. Because when people connect with us, they remember us, come back for more, trust what we have to say, and may eventually buy from us.

When you're creating great content, you don't need to live or die by your analytics. Maybe we should let go of our desire to write for everyone in order to skyrocket our pageviews, and instead hone in on sharing what's unusual, valuable, and unique?

How to measure the value of your content

3 under-used metrics to tell you just how valuable your content is

Value is quite subjective and can be hard to measure. In this section, I'd love to share a few ways we're starting to measure the value of our content here at Buffer.

1. Run an NPS survey

A Net Promoter Score (NPS) is commonly used to measure loyalty between a brand and a consumer. It can also be a great way to measure the value that your blog is delivering to readers.

You calculate NPS by asking a simple question: How likely is it that you would recommend our blog to a friend or colleague? (Using a 0-10 scale to answer.)

Respondents to the question are then grouped as follows:

  • Promoters (score 9-10) are loyal enthusiasts who will keep buying and refer others, fueling growth

  • Passives (score 7-8) are satisfied but unenthusiastic customers who are vulnerable to competitive offerings.

  • Detractors (score 0-6) are unhappy customers who can damage your brand and impede growth through negative word-of-mouth.

Subtracting the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters yields the Net Promoter Score, which can range from a low of -100 (if every customer is a Detractor) to a high of 100 (if every customer is a Promoter).

This handy graphic from the Net Promoter Network highlights the formula:

nps

By running an NPS survey on your blog you can begin to understand how many of your readers truly value the content you're creating and whether they would be happy to share it with their networks.

How to run an NPS Survey

There are plenty of great tools out there to help you run an NPS Survey on your blog and I'd love to share a few below:

You can also create your own survey using a tool like Typeform and distribute it to your readers. One thing that feels important to be mindful of is ensuring you reach all kinds of readers with your survey. For example, sending it only to your email subscribers could slightly skew results as they're likely to already be your most engaged readers.

2. Pay attention to the comments

There has been a lot of debate about the state of blog comments. With the rise of social networks like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, readers have a multitude of ways to engage with your content:

  • They can share a link to your post on Twitter, Facebook (or any network of their choice)

  • They can interact with a post where you've shared a link back to the blog (favoriting a tweet, sending a reply, liking on Facebook)

  • They can retweet your tweet sharing the post or share your Facebook post

  • And much, much more…

With all these options and ways to interact with content, you could argue that a blog comment is losing its relevancy - or on the contrary, you could see it that the value of a blog comment is rising.

Knowing that people can share and comment on your post anywhere, the fact they're taking the time to respond directly within the post itself could be perceived as the highest form of engagement.

For us, comments are an increasingly important metric and one we're focused on measuring. In Q2 2016, we've had a focus on increasing the average comments on each blog post by 100% from Q1 and here's how we're getting on:

comment-tracking

Comments feel like a great measure of the value your content creates. If someone takes the time to spark a discussion on reply to us through a comment then we feel the post must have been useful to them in some way or sparked some curiosity.  A great example is our recent social media study post. This one generated over 70 comments with readers sharing their thoughts on the study and also how our findings compare to their own.

3. Monitor mentions and shares

Whenever I publish a post on the Buffer blog, I'll get a few mentions on Twitter or LinkedIn when people share it. As a result of this, I've started to build a slight intuition around how much value each post is generating based on shares and mentions.

When a post really delivers value and goes above and beyond reader expectations, I'll notice a distinct spike in the number of shares it receives and the number of mentions we receive both via the @buffer accounts and my own personal social media accounts.

It's super easy to keep tabs on how many times your content has been shared. Sharing plugins like SumoMe and Social Warfare can provide share counts on your posts and PostReach (full disclosure: this is a tool a few friends and I have built) and Buzzsumo can pull in data about who is sharing each of your posts on Twitter. I also like to pay extra close attention to my mentions on Twitter after a new post goes live so I can gauge how it's doing and see what people are saying.

A quick tip: Promise value in your headline

Headlines are amazingly important to the success of a piece of content. Before we publish a post, we spend a bit of time focusing on how we can craft a headline that gives the content the best chance of being seen. Amazing content behind a weak headline probably won't get seen.

Sometimes we'll create between 20-30 headlines for each post and choose the one that feels best and other times we'll have a quick chat and riff on how we can make the headline stand out. Here are some extracts from a recent conversation between Leo and I:

headline-convo

The original headline we had was:

53 Graphic Design Terms and Definitions for Non-Designers

And the title we decided on when we hit publish is:

Why Every Marketer in 2016 Needs to Be a (Part-Time) Designer: 53 Design Terms and Tips to Level-Up

This post has generated plenty of shares so far and 18 comments (at the time of writing). By focusing on the headline, we were able to promise value: 53 Design Terms and Tips to Level-Up. And also spark a discussion about the role of a marketer: Why Every Marketer in 2016 Needs to Be a (Part-Time) Designer. Without the time spent tweaking this headline, I'm not sure we would have had such success with this post.

line-section

What makes an idea worth writing about?

Every blog post begins as an idea, but what makes an idea stand out and how do you know which ideas to act on and publish?

Before choosing a post to write, I tend to ask myself three questions:

  1. Is this actionable?

  2. Who will amplify this?

  3. What makes it unique?

And I'd love to go into detail on each of the three questions below:

1. Is it actionable?

On the Buffer blog, we strive to deliver content that helps readers solve a problem or challenge they face in their every-day work environment. This means we like them to be able to read a post and directly action something they've learned from it.

We focus on making content actionable because we believe that if someone learns something from one of our posts they're likely to remember us and even share the post with their network as a New York Times study found that content that is practically useful gets shared more than any other content:

surprising-interesting-practical-viral

2. Who will amplify it?

When creating content, it's important to hone in on your audience and think about who you're writing for. One way I like to frame this is to ask myself “who will amplify this post?” If I can't answer this question then I won't write the post. Normally, this question forces me to focus on a specific area of marketing or a specific role.

(h/t to Rand Fishkin for this one)

3. What makes it unique?

We're surrounded by content nowadays and if you want to stand out, you need to craft content that's unique.

What makes a piece of content unique can vary from post to post. Sometimes it can be timing that makes a post unique, for example, when we published our post on Twitter Polls it was launched shorty after Polls were publicly announced and was one of the first guides on how to use the feature.

Other ways to make your content unique include:

  • Sharing your unique perspective: One of the best ways to make a piece of content unique is to create something that only you can by adding in your own perspective and point of view. As Jory McKay explains on the Crew blog: “Everything has been said before, but it's never been said by you.”

  • Going deeper on a topic that anyone else: There might be a ton of posts out there about Facebook Ads, for example, but you can create a unique post on this subject by going more in-depth than anyone else has.

line-end

Over to you

I believe we can create more value if we pay closer attention to depth than breadth. It's not so much how many people click on our content, it's how many people pay attention to our content. It's how many people we can make an impression on and connect with that really matters.

Measuring the success of blog content is an interesting topic and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Do you feel we put too much focus on the metrics like page views and sessions? How do you measure the quality and value provided by a blog post? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

What controller is this?

I received a call for tomorrow to check out a FPB (or more) and was sent a pic of this controller that they are connected to. I've never encountered them and would like to get somewhat familiar with it before I head out there. Anyone know who makes them or have any documentation on it? It'd be greatly appreciated

Looks like a service light is on, although there are two LEDs there so I can't really tell what that is.

Goodman horizontal coil

Hello all! I'm writing to see if anyone has removed a coil from a Goodman horizontal encased coil. The model is #CHPF4860D6DB. Unit was installed a couple weeks ago and is leaking where the coil sits in the pan. I would like to be able to remove just the coil, instead of having to pull the entire air handler down. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Central air shuts down after 5 minutes

Model #HABA-F024SD. All of a sudden my fan wasn't working when I came home from work. I turned the system off and then on again and the fan started up as it should have. After 5 minutes the fan shut down while the system in the house stayed running. I can hear the humming noise still but the fan wouldn't start. I spun the fan with a stick and it started but then stopped again. I have replaced the fan and it still happened so I replaced the capacitor. The problem happened again the same way so I replaced the contactor. At this point the same thing has happened after all of the repairs. I paid a service fee to have a company come out and they checked the freon only to find out that it didn't need charged. They still could not diagnose the problem. Please help!

Lennox HSXB15-036 fan failure question

Came home today to find a very sluggsh fan on the compressor unit outside.

After shutting the unit down I found the fan blade to turn but relatively stiff.

Not frozen binding but certainly not 'free spinning" I know a value judgement a bit but pretty sure the bearings are getting old

being 13 years old and all

Question is. 1)is it still possible to be the run/start capacitor? This was replaced once before.

and 2) how bad is it to run very temporarily w/out the fan.

3)What about a fan, like a box fan as a temporary cooling unit?

One odd educational question:

The shutoff outside that cuts the 220V to the compressor/fan.. Why is there not 110 across each set of fuse contacts?

Xr14 and tam7

Just finished this yesterday for a family friend.

New soundlined return box, lines, filter media, and twisty transition.

Might get better pictures when i go for inspection. It was dark.

Utilitech AC condensate pump not pumping

Hi. I have a Utilitech condensate pump that all of a sudden decided to not pump out the water that collects in the plastic bin underneath. The water overflowed and I'm assuming it's why my downstairs neighbor has water damage on her ceiling. How can I fix this? The white float inside seems to be working because the "run" and "alarm" lights are both coming on when the water reaches a higher level, but I don't see or hear it running and water just sits in the bin. I'm having to manually empty it to run my AC. Any suggestions would be helpful. The image of the pump I have is below. Thanks!

Carrier Condenser Fan won't start by itself

Hi all, thanks for checking out my post. I have been having this problem for a week now.

I originally had a service tech out and he let me know the capacitor and fan motor were bad. I opted to replace them both myself. After replacement of both, the condenser fan still won't fire up without a stick push. I have tested the new cap and get the appropriate values (80 & 5, dual run). I've ohm tested the motor and it checks out. I've taken the contactor off and tested the resistance between the low voltages and get 8.1 (normal). What else would prevent my condenser fan from starting up? The only thing I haven't tested is the amp draw. I have tried two brand new motors and caps with the same effect. I have also tested a temp sensor in the unit and get about 1400. Does this sensor have any impact on condenser motormotor start up?

The AC runs fine with condenser fan stick push started, but once target temp is reached, and AC shuts off, the fan won't start again without support.

The motor is a single phase three wire, black is going to line 1, white is going to terminal 2 and brown is going to capacitor.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Can liquid refrigerant boil out when heated

Have a cope 4d 15 ton I think but that's neither here no there. Seldom intermittent oil trips. Oil consistantly runs foamy- all the time. There is plenty of oil pressure and superheat is plenty - 15-20 at the compressor. HGB takes care of low loads. There is an unloader but have done numerous tests and doesn't seem to have an oil return problem from running part load. With compressor off oil in glass is about half/ little less then 3/4 full so I doubt there is oil over charge hitting the crank causing foaming- yes here we go again another thread about foaming. My question is IF a heater had gone out and had been replaced (by others not me) can the oil stay laced with liquid even with the heater up and running after plenty of time? I with compressor off I don't see any foam or bubbling in glass.

A/C Fan Not Turning On

When turning on my A/C, the furnace activates and the vent extract warm air, but the fan does not turn on at all. After looking at some videos, I've pulled out the fuses (pic shown; is it possible that they are blown?), but there's no indication of a blown fuse.

Some of the online videos referenced the compressor and capacitor; however, most videos only appear to show the capacitor and I'm unclear if they are two different things or the same with different terminology.

I attempted to kick start the fan, which seems to rotate freely without any issues.

Should I attempt to replace the fuses, capacitor or both?

Help on question about replacing unit!

Right now we've got a 25 year old York 3.5 ton split gas unit. We had two different technicians come out and one said to just replace the condenser and coil and leave the existing furnace and the other recommended replacing the condenser coil and furnace while your at it, he said because it's gonna save money to go ahead and replace it all as opposed to doing the air this year and possibly the furnace next year. I kinda see both sides because the unit is 25 years old, but the other guy is saying nothing is wrong with the furnace so why bother it. Just asking for a few opinions as to what y'all would do. No ground wire for new bathroom fan.

Hey guys, my house is an older home.

I removed a bathroom ceiling light and replaced it with a fan/light combo. The old light was only connected by black and white wires, inside a junction box with no ground.

Removed the box, installed the new fan housing to the joist and ran wires into fan housing box.

Now I know to connect the black to black and white to white but where do I run my ground wire to?

Can I self tap it into the fan housing box itself? Or do I even need to ground it to anything since no one will ever touch the fan itself, only the light switch on the wall to control it.

Thanks!

insulation for concrete basement wall and ceiling

I'm redoing a small reception room that is 50% below grade (it's on a slope outside).

The current insulation was 1 inch Styrofoam but I'm not sure this was enough as the room was always a bit damp and cold.

We were thinking of adding 2 inch Styrofoam but the room is only 50 sq ft of floor space so every inch counts for a bit of extra room.

The walls will have framing/strapping and then paneling on top.

Is there any high density durofoam or something similar that could be put it in to be only 1 to 1.5 inches thick with good insulation?

Don't want it to be too expensive so can't use foam injection or other methods.

$1 billion funding gap for Scarborough transit a question of 'priorities'

Chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat says city council now needs to make the tough decisions on an "optimized" plan.

Kenmore wash machine has mind of it's own during spin cycle.

This is Kenmore 70 Series HD ....Model #110.22722.100

For a long time now (year +) I sometimes have to lift and close the lid or push/pull the cycle control knob to get the machine to spin after the wash cycle and/or after the rinse cycle. The machine ALWAYS drains and SOMETIMES completes the cycles on it's own.

So after reading and watching videos, I was convinced the lid switch was bad.

Then the other day, another problem appeared. No spin OR agitation, just a clattering noise, which after some investigation, sounded like the coupler.

So I was now pushed into the repair job.

Got a new coupler and lid switch. Both installations went smooth as silk.

All SEEMED to be fine in a quick test, but as soon as I put the machine into an entire wash cycle, no spin again.

I should mention that once in a great while, my problem mirrored one posted by DyannP who said after washing, the machine just sat there as the clock cycled and did nothing more.

What's really crazy is that if I push the control knob in and pull it back out, or lift the lid slightly and close it again, the spin cycle starts right up which tells me that maybe the lid switch was actually not the problem.

Anyway it's brand new now, so I know this one's good. So what can be causing the spin problem? When it spins, it spins fast so I know it's not the clutch.

Could this be in the timer control knob? or a wiring problem???

I need HELP!

Double Oven Wiring

Hey everybody. My wife and I are remodeling our home and she has decided on a Jenn-Air JJW2830DS double oven. The house currently has a single gas oven with an unused 240V outlet. The circuit is 40A with 8/3 stranded wire, my plan was to pull the wiring up and run it down to our new location. I was reading through the installation instructions for the oven and it states the oven requires 8g solid wire. I emailed customer support asking for clarification/reasoning and the response I got was "solid wire is required". Can anyone explain the reasoning behind this?

I've looked around some and didn't see anything in the NEC specifying solid vs stranded wire but I'm not an electrician and it can be difficult to decode sometimes. I've looked at both HD and Lowes and the 50' or cut to length 8/3 was stranded, the individual strands did appear to be thicker gauge than what we have currently. I'm comfortable with the wiring, especially since it will basically just be redoing what is already there. Getting the new wire into the box and the old wire out is my main concern so I'm undecided if I will attempt it myself or call an electrician.

If I do it myself I'd have to track down some solid 8/3 but it should be under $100 which isn't too big a deal but would still like avoid it if unnecessary. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cement Flooring

Just a quick run down of what I'm working with first, then I'll get into the questions I have.

I have a small mudroom built over the landing pad of some old steps. The steps have recently been redone. The mason was unable to completely take down the landing pad walls because he said the dirt underneath would fall out. I didn't look underneath myself to see if it was hollow or properly supported as I'm not a contractor or inspector.

Now to what I want to do. There was plywood glued to old tiles which I ripped out. I'm planning on removing the old tile which appears to be set on top of the concrete landing pad. I want to raise it, because past the door threshold it goes down approximately 1.5 inches, then to go into the house is a 1.5 inch rise. What I need to do ia fill in the cracks in the top landing pad and use self leveling concretr to ensure it's even.

Now to the question. What can I use to raise it approximately 1 inch? I'm going to use backer board and tile, which will raise it about .5 inches but what could I put underneath? From reading the forums backerboard and plywood should not be applied directly to the concrete. If I need to apply the tile directly to the conrete I will if there are no other legitimate options, but I much rather raise it. Also, if the old landing pad is hallow, I imagine using nails would not be a great idea?

I too am thrilled about my mud room being built on decades old steps. Unfortunately, the cost of a complete tear down and rebuild is too much for me to take on right now.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

finding door fin sweep for exterior door

Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

I am in search of a door fin sweep to replace my back exterior door and garage door fins that have become brittle over the years). I really like the ones on the doors that came with the house. I cannot find any like this online. I assume it is just screwed to the bottom and I like the look of it better than the U-shaped ones that "hug" the bottom of the door. I even came across a website that listed the five common types of door fin sweeps and it wasn't on there.

Does anyone have any idea where I would find a replacement like this? I searched the door and did not find a make or model. Thank you for any assistance!

Power surges causing TV's HDMI ports to blow out

Recently had my whole house remodeled and I've been having issues with the hdmi ports blowing out on my tv. It's happened 3 times in about 9 months and I only have 3 months left on the TV's warranty. Obviously the bigger problem is not knowing what is causing it. I first noticed that if I ran my table saw in the basement it would turn the sound on or off on the tv.. I realized after hdmi failed that it was the surge. I have a surge protector which is obviously not preventing anything. Now I don't use that outlet in the basement but noticed that if I turn on the ceiling fan (which is a wall switch right near tv and on same circuit) the tv sometimes will go black for a second then back on. I have all new electric on the 2nd floor of home (but not on 1st floor where tv is) and noticed when someone used a power tool upstairs it caused the same blackout on tv. My electrician said he's not sure what is causing it.

Any thoughts / suggestions? I planned on calling the electric company tomorrow to see if they can check the power going into the house. Is there something else anyone recommends? Whole house surge protector? Obviously would prefer to fix the issue rather than treat the symptom. Any help is appreciated

AC not blowing Cold in Part of the Upstairs

I have central air with one outside unit that cools the downstairs, and one that cools the upstairs. Downstairs is fine. Recently upstairs I noticed a difference in the air temperature coming out of the vents in just some rooms upstairs (not all) - about half the upstairs is cooling well, the other half (including the room the thermostat is in) is blowing cool, but not cold air. I have not taken the temperature of the air from each vent directly, however I can tell you that just placing your hand on the vent you can easily tell there is a difference in temperature between them. Since the same outside unit and blower control the entire upstairs area I don't understand why the air would be colder in part of the upstairs area and not others - I would think it would all either be cold or it wouldn't be. Anyone have any ideas of what to look for? I have an Air Conditioning tech scheduled to come out this week.

Magic Leak

Was looking at an ICP coil.. txv was bad..... and I had the cover off the coil and was looking around in there to see if I would be able to get the txv pulled out enough to replace without having to cut the furnace vent tubing..... I am looking in the coil housing and notice this fog coming across the front of the coil...... stood back and saw this....

Tools electronic gauges diminishing returns?

First, I like many of you love tools; mine are the best without being gold plated. So, electronic gauges.

What is the difference between a paper slide rule for sup/super heat and an a three hose setup? Assume a Appion vacuum line, etc with core removal, etc. if so inclined.

With hoses the units are north of $400 and seem subject to the same issues as the new phones. Blue tooth does not go around corners and appears limited to line of sight.

The Sporlan unit requires an I Pad. So if electronics are necessary and you are going to tote your I phone isn't there an app that lets you enter the numbers and come up with the answer skipping the electronic stuff? Is toting the fancy box around easier than a manifold with 2 gauges - think 32 foot ladder.

Second point. Evacuation to 20 microns or so. One poster commented he didn't remove the schrader valves, sucked and ran. If there is a filter dryer, does it really make any difference? If the moisture goes into the dryer, and if there are no leaks, isn't it job done?

This is not an invitation for poor workmanship, just a question regarding diminishing returns. I hate call backs, I hate remakes, I hate not feeling like I have done my job.

But back to the beginning, a brass manifold, three hoses and two gauges, and a paper slide rule seems like a hard combination to beat. If you drop the manifold, replace a gauge, drop the electronic, and well, what happens when you drop your fancy phone? The computer between your ears goes up and down a ladder very easily with the rest of you, delicate gauges and a tool kit not so much so. Likewise, lose the slide rule, second one in truck, drip the I pad, second one in the truck?

Outside faucet id

Hello forum,

I have an older outside faucet that leaks from the knob shaft when turned on while the hose nozzle is closed.

I removed the screw from inside the knob, loosened the threaded collar around the shaft, but couldn't actually get to any replaceable parts.

Can someone ID this faucet and suggest a way to service it or remove/replace it entirely? It's on an outside wall and there is a removable plywood cover that may provide access to the behind the wall parts if needed.

Shut Off Valve Question

The basement shut off valve for my outside faucet (hose bibb) has been a pain for years. I have repacked the packing nut, replaced the washer, etc. Our water has lots of minerals. I did more replacements today but I still have seepage. I found a new boiler drain. I replaced the shut off valve innards with the innards from the boiler drain and it fit and works with no leaks. Is there any reason not to have done this? I have asked folks in plumbing departments if I could buy a new shut off valve and use its innards as a replacement for mine.....they keep saying 'no' that different manufacturers use different specs. Did I luck out with the boiler drain I have?

Foaming Carpet Cleaner

There is a lot of "how to" on the web about mixing your own carpet cleaning solutions. I like the

foaming stuff in spray cans. Obviously, the compressed liquid becomes a foam as it exits the

valve and the pressure drops.

I've got one quart, two quart, one gallon, and two gallon tank sprayers. Is there any combination

of chemicals I can mix in a tank sprayer that is similar to the foaming product from spray cans?

Reusing reclaimed refrigerant

This is my first post here so hello all!

A friend and I in Denver were talking about this and were not too sure of the right answer:

Lets say you have a small leak to fix in a 20 ton condensing unit. The customer wants to keep the 60 lbs of refrigerant to save money.

I know you can reclaim it (MO99 btw), but can you reuse it? And if you can, how would you reintroduce it to the system? Would you have to flip the recovery tank over (to charge as a liquid) as you normally would in the charging process? We've never actually done it and were curious.

Thanks for any help!

How This Digital Agency Drives Revenue from Social Media (and How You Can Too)

You might've heard the advice that your call-to-action should have one job, your email subject line one job, your blog post one job.

Focus, with online marketing, is key.

Turns out focus has a wonderful effect on building a business and driving results.

Gather Social, a digital agency based in Nottingham, UK, takes this focused approach with every new client they bring on. The single thing that Gather Social wants to achieve for you on social media is an impact to your bottom line revenue.

And this focus has paid off!

Gather Social was profitable within its first year of existence, and they retain 90 percent of the clients they work with. Sam and Paul of Gather Social were kind to chat with us about the way they approach social media, the tools and systems they've built, and the workflows that have made the biggest impact for them.

14566795-large

Kevan, Buffer:

How might you approach a social media strategy for a client? How does social media fit within what you offer at Gather Social?

Paul Gordon, Gather Social:

Although we're technically a marketing agency, we're primarily focused on sales for people. Obviously, there's a big thing in the social media industry about being social on social media, but we really approach things from a traditional sales and marketing perspective where social media channels are the marketing channels that we can communicate directly with potential customers.

For our clients, although there is obviously the social aspect of social media in there somewhere, the primary focus is always about sales. It might sound quite careless, but it's always about what they're trying to sell and what message they're trying to get across and then getting that across to as many people on social media in the most efficient way possible.

4

Kevan:

How do you go about measuring sales? How does that affect what you do for those clients?

Sam Evans, Gather Social:

We go about measuring it, actually, with client feedback.

We have retained the vast majority of our business from our clients. We still have our very first customers with us. All our customers are spending more money with us, so yeah, we see that as a good measure of our success.

Some customers obviously have tracking in place, where they analyze what's coming in from Twitter and Facebook and LinkedIn. Obviously, we produce the reports, but we have a very traditional approach and try to speak to our clients a lot on the phone, or a monthly catch up. We'll then tweak the delivery strategy based on what feedback we get from the early phase of the strategy or off the marketing going live, and then really refine it towards a 6-12 month process. That seems to work really well with us, in terms of asking the client how it's working for them and making any changes that we can do to be more targeted based on what feedback they give us.

Paul:

We do use the analytics that come out of Buffer, and we try to, as Sam said - where we can with the statistics that we get from clients - try and marry those up. So rather than it just being looking at the content that's doing well and matching that up with the actual social media statistics, we're trying to look at the actual bottom-line where possible with the clients and see what content has been going out in a similar timeframe that's actually affected their sales and revenue.

Sam:

I'll give you a really good idea of the feedback. I had a review session with a client last week on what he spent, and I asked him how it was going, and he said to me, “Only the day before, I had a call from somebody in Scotland, who said, 'I've seen your video on Facebook. I want the third product along. When can you deliver?'”

He said he reckoned he gets calls like that all the time now, and that was his feedback.

We've done things like show promotion, where the clients have been attending shows on Twitter. We've gotten on top of Twitter's trending topics for the show, ahead of the show. The organizers of the show have come and asked them how they've done it, or how they generate so much traffic to their exhibition stand. Obviously, it's us working in the background being very, very targeted with our delivery, and essentially using Buffer to premeditate all of our movements.

To give you some really good feedback we had the other day, we have a special education needs innovative technology manufacturer that we work with. They didn't tell us, but they'd taken out an advertisement in an industry-leading publication. They had a full page spread, a full page editorial, and they tracked the return from 12 months from the advert against 6 months with us, and we outperformed, considerably, the 12-month advert to the point where they cancelled the advert and gave us the budget to spend more on social.

Kevan:

If I'm understanding right, then you're saying the client plays a big part in helping to show that one-to-one relationship with social to sales. Do you all have any other tools or workflows to help with analyzing social and sales at that granular level?

Sam:

We use analytics out of Buffer, obviously, and then we use analytics from the website traffic, as well.

Paul:

I think it differs with relations with clients. We have some really small clients, almost one-person clients. And then with some of the larger organizations, getting that sort of information out of them is fairly impossible. I wouldn't go as far to say it's anecdotal, but - and it sounds a bit cliché -we just try and develop that human interaction and that human relationship with our clients so we can actually find out exactly what's going on, essentially making sure that what we're doing on social media is affecting their bottom-line. If we're just increasing numbers for a vanity project, it's not really what we're about as a business.

5

Sam:

We've always set out our agency for looking at the sale element of social media, as opposed to the social side of it. That's the approach that we take with businesses. We've turned businesses down, so to speak, or ended business arrangements with clients based on the fact that they don't share the same view as us. They think that we should maybe be discussing the weather, and we say, “Well, the weather's never sold a 10,000 pound piece of equipment.”

Kevan:

That's great, so what does that look like in practice for you all? I'm assuming and guessing your calls to action are very explicit on the social update to share this very product or business focus, how does that look for you?

Paul:

Yeah, we're very product-focused. Basically if a client has something to sell with us, we have a little bit of background as to what we're doing. We have in-house software. We actually connect through to the Buffer API to push our things through to the Buffer dashboard. We've built a system that changes on the per-client basis. It's primarily focused on the products that the client's trying to sell. The client is trying to push to its potential customers, but we also mix that in with industry-related information and things like that. All this content - the sales, promotion, industry information - is pushed from our system into Buffer, through the API.

And primarily, as Sam said, the content has a sales focus.

Sam:

I've always worked in sales and marketing, and I've done different campaigns as an employee on social media. I understand content generation and content marketing, but the approach that we've taken is if we don't improve sales for our clients, then we're a luxury. And what we want to be instead is the last thing that they would ax in a downturn, both for value for money and that base on the material investment.

After our early days of getting established and really getting set up, we spent a long time working on this product, working on what we were going to do and how we were going to do it. Both Paul and I worked on different social media projects and development projects and sales and marketing projects before we launched as Gather. We spent a lot of time focusing on how we would make Gather deliverable for sales. What we've been able to do is move towards businesses where, essentially, they have expensive products to buy: If you help them sell one of those products a month, or they sell one product a month from social media, you've already paid for yourself. We had clients where we've paid our fee for a year in the first month of working for them because we've got them a sale on a bigger ticket item, which has been the secret to our success really.

Kevan:

The product you built sounds really interesting. Would you be up for stepping me through what that workflow looks like for you all when it comes to deciding on and posting the content through Buffer?

Paul:

We have our own database system, which we feed all our content in. We devise a strategy with a client, and that strategy is fed into our system. There's various algorithms written in the background that process all the information going in, and then we connect through to Buffer using the API to deliver that. It's Buffer, which is the end point of our system, which connects through to all the social media channels and processes that. We've got a lot of clients who obviously use Twitter and Facebook, primarily, as their communication channels, and we have a few which are more business-focused, which rely on LinkedIn, as well. Buffer really helps when we're processing all that information to get that delivered.

Sam:

All the updates are handcrafted. None of our content is generated by a computer, so to speak. We have a full team, so we've got video production; we have photography; we have copywriters; we have image creation; we've got a designer. We have a full creative team in-house that produces all of the content for all of the clients, or works in conjunction with the client to produce the content.

Paul:

Then the algorithm basically pieces together all the various elements of the content they want to be distributed and puts it all together, basically into one package, which is then sent on to Buffer to schedule and post.

Sam:

Basically, we have relied on Buffer, heavily, for developing our slant on the agency. I remember the day when Paul skyped me saying, “Check Buffer.”

Paul:

A little bit of background, I've used Buffer, sort of on a personal level, in the past. I've run various like cycling clubs where I've actually used Buffer connected to WordPress blogs to distribute content. It was kind of the go-to piece of software, really, when we set Gather up.

Sam:

I'd never come across it before. I was like, “Wow. There's going to be so much I can do, from a marketing perspective, for our clients with this software,” being able to queue up all of my premeditated plans.

It's been Buffer from day one.

From our perspective, nothing's come close to rivaling Buffer.

6

Kevan:

Are there particular features within Buffer that you have found you get lots of use out of or been especially essential for how you all do things?

Paul:

Well, certainly the scheduling. As an agency, we've always built ourselves on lean margins. A lot of our competition is people-heavy. We know that they've had to rely on people in-house to be sort of handcrafting updates and making sure that updates go out at certain times of the day, whereas we're running on a very tight ship. There are only a few of us in the company, but to the outside world, we appear to be a much larger organization, people-wise. Inside the actual scheduling that Buffer offers, it allows our clients and us to have that presence throughout the day that you just wouldn't be able to do.

Sam:

Buffer allows for the creative team to be creative.

One hundred percent of the time, the team has been creative. They've spent time with the copywriting or video production or image makers being creative and doing those things, then they pass through the formatting phase, and then it goes over to tech to be scheduled. It just means that nobody's time is wasted being.

If we have someone on the team who is a creative person, they don't have to worry about the scheduling. One person handles the scheduling, and all of my creative team are just creative all of the time.

It means we have a very unusual, sort of cool structure. We only have core hours between 11 and 3. We have people doing Pilates at 9:30 in the morning because it helps them be creative. We offer people a great life when they come and work for us because they don't have to travel in rush-hour, they can go to the gym, they can work at 4 o'clock in the morning if they want, when they're the most creative because they're just creating stuff for social media, with a sales focus, which is why we've done so well. Buffer gives us that ability to do that.

Kevan:

Sounds like a wonderful way to run a business. How have you found success with this method?

Paul:

We started a business without any external investment, and we founded the company concentrating on getting a revenue stream as soon possible. We achieved profitability within the first year.

Sam:

Yeah. We made a profit in the first year, and we were paying ourselves a comparative wage to the jobs that we'd left within three months.

I quit a month before Paul, and Paul quit a month after me. We held each others' hand, and three months later, we were no longer eating beans and stale bread. We were back on normal food, so to speak.

Paul:

From a personal point of view, for the last few years, I worked at a startup before setting up Gather social. It's always been, for me, looking at the startup arena and obviously VC funding is a massive part of that. For me, setting up my own business was always about boot strapping and getting to a sustainable revenue stream as quickly as possible. We didn't want nobody from outside of the company having any hold over us really, so we got to that position fairly quickly.

Help with crushed limestone parking pad

We recently had a new crushed limestone parking pad out in beside our garage. It was installed for the purpose of holding a new camping trailer (small 800lbs) and our trash containers. We are extremely happy with the look and size of it. The one disappointment is the material used for the fill. The fill material that they used was a ¼" crushed limestone. They said that it would pack down nicely, but it doesn't seem to that well. The trash containers are really hard to pull on it as the wheels sink down and when I back the trailer onto it, I need to put my truck into 4 wheel drive to keep the tires from sinking down into it. What are our options here? It is about 4-5" worth of limestone. Is there a way to add clay to it? I had the idea of adding concrete to it, but I doubt that would hold up to the truck driving on it. Any guidance is appreciated!

410a charging after RX11 flush

What's up Fellas.

I'm still uncertain about RX11 flush. Has anyone else here had problems charging a unit after using it?

Lubricant for Ancient Moen Faucet

I have an old Moen single lever faucet which is side mounted to the back splash of an old Hotpoint dishwasher/sink combo circa 60's. No chance to find a replacement or even disassemble it. Every year when I return to the cottage the lever gets a little harder to move up and down. Is there any lubricant that I can pour in the top that will help?

Thanks very much. Frank.

We Interviewed 75 Top Social Media Marketers. Here's What They're Working On, Today

I consider myself a pretty lucky guy.

I have the amazing privilege of speaking with social media managers from a variety of brands and industries around the world on a daily basis. Listening and learning about the projects they're working on, their biggest challenges, and what their aspirations are on social media now and in the future has helped me tremendously along the way.

But then it dawned on me - I've never taken the time to write any of this incredible information down to share with other marketers!

Well, I'm happy to change that. We thought it'd be great to share all the awesome insight we're lucky to glean from the world's best social media marketers, starting with this simple (and fascinating, revealing, inspiring) question:

What is the biggest project you're working on?

We surveyed and spoke with more than 150 of the world's best social media managers and put together a selection of 75 answers here.

Much love to the authors of this Medium post for inspiring us to write this article!

Today's biggest social media projects

Huge thank yous to all the social media managers who responded to our survey. If you happen to spend time sharing to social for your business or brand, it'd be great to hear your thoughts in the comments here, too!

It was inspiring and motivating to see all the answers, from 150 marketers! (Many of the people I spoke with told me that they too wondered what other social media managers were up to.)

Below you'll find all their answers. I hope it might give you a bit of inspiration from what everyone is working on, and further down we're excited to share how we plan to put these learnings into action at Buffer.

The breakdown of social media projects

From a high level, here are some graphs that explain the types of projects that social media managers are working on at the moment. Keep reading to see each individual response after this section of charts.

More than 25% of social media managers said their #1 project was content creation.

Other themes included:

  • Increasing engagement

  • Growing an audience

  • Scheduling content

  • Event planning

While there was a lot of focus on content, very little of it seemed to be video content.

Only 6 out of 150 social media managers mentioned video among their biggest projects.

On the flip side, one big theme of the content, planning, and strategic projects was social media ads.

A whopping 33 out of 150 social media managers mentioned “paid advertising” in their biggest projects for the week.

Takeaways: Projects that inspired us (and lessons we learned)

I found it super interesting that social media managers from around the world have many of the same projects in common. Creating awesome content, driving traffic to company websites from social media, and scheduling out plenty of content in advance were a few recurring themes throughout.

There were so many great projects here. These were just a few that caught our eye (and might lead to us working on something similar):

  • Preparing campaigns for product announcements

  • Creating a content / social calendar

  • Educating others on Snapchat

  • Testing native video

  • Optimizing paid ads to get a better cost-per-click

One interesting learning from this survey is that there weren't too many social media managers working on video production as one of their top projects. In a recent research study, we found video to be one of the biggest trends in social for gaining more engagement, and it seems like the opportunity is still there for brands to make a splash before video reaches the saturation point.

The second major takeaway that came about from talking with these incredible talented social media managers is that time management and task prioritization are becoming increasingly important. Social media managers' day-to-day duties are continually increasing and so it's more important than ever to work smarter, not harder. A good lesson we'd love to take to heart at Buffer!
