Replacing linoleum with ceramic tile
Hello, we are in the planning stage of remodeling our kitchen. One part of the planned remodel is tearing up the linoleum floor and laying ceramic tile. I have no experience working with ceramic tile, but I'm willing to practice and learn. At this point I'm trying to figure out how much prep work/materials will be needed before the tile can be laid, and also whether the floor can support the extra weight of ceramic tiles - something that hadn't even occurred to me until reading a similar thread on this forum a little while ago.
I pulled back the step riser into the kitchen tonight to see the cross section beneath the linoleum. The linoleum is on a 1/8" panel, and beneath that is a particle board that is either 5/8" or 3/4" thick. I didn't notice the next layer when I had the step riser off, but looking at the picture on my computer (see below) it appears there's a layer of plywood beneath the particle board. Plywood is also what I see when looking up between the joists in the basement. I'm not sure how thick the plywood is at this point though.

I've included several pictures of the joists below. They are 2x10's ( 1 5/8" x 9 1/4" ). Each half of the floor across the house is on its own joists and they meet in the middle, where they rest on a beam of 3 2x10's running across the basement, sitting on posts - so the extra weight of the tile would ultimately sit on this beam and posts. I only found one stamp on any of the joists so far - not sure if it means anything relevant.
